Recovery Funds
Recovery Funds are self-kept banks as a reward for fighting against inner demons. For example, someone recovering from bulimia may put a dollar in their Recovery Fund every day that they do not binge/purge for a certain period of time. By the end of the time, the money may be used for personal rewards, such as a shopping spree or a vacation, or it could be donated to someone in need of therapy or rehabilitation and might not be able to afford it.Recovery Funds give a positive reinforcement to keep working at the end result: an absence of inner pain.
Create Your Own!
Recovery Funds come in all shapes and sizes and the amount of money put in is completely up to you. Come up with fun and creative ways to fund your recovery. We recommend a plastic bottle; they are easy to decorate in your own way. If you are having difficulty making your Recovery Fund, here are a few simple steps:
- Buy a plastic bottle of water - available pretty much anywhere drinks are sold - and drink that water (Recovery Funds are good for your health in more ways than one!!). When the bottle is empty, turn it upside down and shake it a little bit, just to make sure all the water is out.
- Cut off the lip of the bottle (where the cap goes on); this makes it easier to put coins into the bottle, if you so choose to reward yourself with smaller amounts of money.
- Wrap the bottle with beige masking tape. Masking tape is easier to write on than the plastic itself, and it is generally very cheap - available at craft stores, drug stores, and school supply stores like Office Depot.
- Doodle on the masking tape. Get a bunch of different-coloured markers and write positive words, like "Stay strong" or "Be brave," or pictures that make you happy, like butterflies or perhaps a unicorn wearing a rainbow cape.
- Keep adding money. If you are unable to add money one day, it's okay; relapse is a part of the recovery process.
